One of the books I has been recently reading (or re-reading)
is “The 60 Second Leader” by Phil Dourado. The following brief piece jumped and
slapped me in the face last week as I was reading the chapter on Optimism. This
was written directly for ME but it surely has implications for EVERYONE (not
only leaders).
“A leader’s mood is infectious. It can spread like wildfire
through an organization. You can poison or uplift the mood without realizing
it.” Mike Harris, found CEO, First Direct Bank.
Be very aware of how your slightest signals can affect
people when you are in a position of power (that’s for all you formal leaders)
or people look to you to lead (informal leaders).
“No one wants to work for a grouch. Research has proven it:
optimistic, enthusiastic leaders more easily retain their people compared with
those bosses who tend toward negative moods. Numerous studies show that when
the leader is in a happy mood, the people around him view everything in a more
positive light. That, in turn, makes them more optimistic about achieving their
goals, enhances their creativity and the efficiency in their decision-making,
and predisposes them to be helpful.” Primal Leadership, Goleman/Boyatzis/McKee.
Don’t forget the Golden Rule – do unto others as you would
have them do unto you.
